Pacquiao Insiders Say Manny Not Keen on Humberto Soto Bout!

Whatever Manny Pacquiao wants Manny Pacquiao gets right?

You would figure that to be the case now that nearly all of the Everlast Einsteins have accepted and annointed Pinoy idol
Megamanny as either the Philippine most entertaining fighter or, in Manny’s case as having achieved both of those exalted positions.

But a cadre of Pacman insiders including Boxingconfidential super-snooper Hermie Rivera are pounding the Pacman drums and the
message is that there is a communication gap between Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum.

While the Top Rank top honcho said he wants what is best for Manny and ergo what’s best for his promotional outfit, there is real
chasm in what’s in Uncle Bob’s Harvard Law School trained mind and the mental landscape as viewed by Pacquiao.

“Bob is trying to ram Edwin Valero or Humberto Soto or maybe both of them down Manny’s throat,” Rivera said. This is odd what
with the David Diaz fight being a PPV fiasco with less than 200,000 buys. Manny and some of his closest advisers blame the
turgid PPV TV numbers on the fact that Diaz was a little-known guy that no one could conceive of beating Manny.

In fact as it turned out, it was a brutal mismatch in which Manny shined. But no one dare label that boxing butchery competitive.”

So where does Manny’s personal and pugilistic agenda take a turn away from Arum?

Another Pacquaio insider tells Boxingconfidential that outside of boxing and his family aspirations, Pacman’s biggest dream now is
to run for and get elected as governor of a newly-created state in the Philippines which is located near his hometown of General Santos city.

This election is not until 2010. But Pacquiao wants to spend a lot of time and money seeding his second electoral try next year.

“Maybe Bob does not get this part,”the Pacman confidante said, “and maybe Bob’s Pacquiao pipeline the Canadian Michael Koncz does not either. Winning this gubernatorial election is paramount on Manny’s mind. With this goal in mind, Manny does not want to fight Valero and then maybe Soto and make relative peanuts.

“What Manny wants is to fight the megafight with popular Ricky Hatton. Arum has explained to him that it can’t happen now because Hatton is fighting Paulie Malignaggi in November. Arum said a step-aside fee cannot be negotiated but Paulie’s promoter Lou DiBella said he has an open mind and open ears.

“Even if Manny accepts Arum’s story, he is still balking at what he percieves as a mismatch and a bout in which the American
public knows so little about Valero.

Manny thinks Edwins windmill punching might provide some cool air to ringsiders but little else.

Manny thinks he can beat Valero perhaps even with more ease than when he thumped poor Diaz.

Manny thinks with his nimble foot and improved defense, Edwin could not hit him in the ass with a bag of rice.

As for Soto goes, he is no Mexican legend and he got beat by Joan Guzman.

So what does he bring to the table but toughness?”

This camp follower said that Pacman told Arum he wants to fight Hatton by February or March at the latest.

The source said Megamanny sees a megapurse of perhaps $15 million in that bout which is about double of what he can earn against Soto and Valero.

Whatever Manny wants, Manny gets?

No one said there is dissension in the air. It’s more along the lines of “Cool Hand Luke” and “a failure to communicate.”

Stay tuned as The Pacman turns.

—-Hey Boss Mike Marley, tell these delirious haters of your Gal Pac that tickets and PPV buys have zoomed up of late. Have them check the latest from the tills and they’ll be eating their rice quota or as you put it–humble pie–on the jump of sales that have been registering at the box office.

A heart-warming turn-around for Manny Pacquiao’s co-trainer Buboy Fernandez who wagered one of his air-conditioned passenger buses that his Pacman will allow Diaz to see daylight only after the 9th round.

I don’t know how much head trainer Freddie Roach will lay down for the ‘Lethal Combination’ title fight of his ward but it could be substantial ‘coz of his restlessness over the decisions (though one must concede) terrific–down the wire– finishes of Manny’s last two fights. (Barrera-Marquez.)

I myself would bet my carabao against Chicago’s defending champ but the odds says it will take 550 of our country’s beast of burden to rake in 100 if your bet is on the favored Filipino idol.

Unbelievably stiff for a farming -scribe like me Mike.

But that’s not why I’m touching base MM. We are supposed to see each other here at Vegas’ Mandalay casino to relish the result of a sensational punch-for-pay outing of the Pinoy boxing idol against the MexAm defending champ.

All is in readiness for the daring duo in case your wondering and not too busy firing your top-notch reporters for the crowd-pleasing rumble.

The Pacquiao-Diaz championship card will have the fans winners of the acclaimed pairing of two great lightweight machos.

So there.

“In the same way the magicians are intrigued by Houdini, golfers look to 9-time golf major winner Ben Hogan as the ultimate golfing genius: the most skillful swinger and shot maker of all time”

“William Benjamin Hogan is what Mozart is to music, Einstein is to science and Muhammad Ali is to boxing.”
—John Andrisani, Golf Digest Editor.

The same could be said of boxing superstar and amateur golfer Oscar de la Hoya on his boxing know how deemed by fighters and afficionados as “pure genius” creating through boxing experience the megawatt Golden Boy Promotions.

What the Ben Hogan Golf Company is to golf Golden Boy Promotions is to boxing—-parallel success stories transcending sports and business.

San Francisco’s City Hall was abuzz as Oscar dela Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr.—boxing’s latest legends– bared the specifics on boxing’s version of swinging and shot making before an appreciative crowd anxious to know more about their May 5 outing at Vegas’ MGM Grand Casino.

First to tee off was the brash Floyd “Pretty Boy” Mayweather, Jr.who thanked his fans for the opportunity and promptly bragged that he’s the world’s best—pound-for-pound.

Conciliatory and respectful (unusual for Floyd), the Pretty Boy enthused, “I’d like to thank Oscar for the chance to beat him up. I am looking forward to doing future business with his Golden Boy Promotions.”

Quite a contrast to their earlier meetings with media when Floyd accused Oscar of throwing his fight against Bernard Hopkins.

Doing his own impression of ‘The Greatest’ ,Floyd Jr. was an absolute thrash talker at the stare down with his saliva-laden yammering on target at the nattily-dressed de la Hoya.

The Golden Boy,who came in a gray wool suit in a red-stripe tie ala Ben Hogan sans the white cap, stood bemused with stares that reminded everyone he is the promoter and the fighter to give him a “beat down”.

The month before, The Golf Channel featured Oscar hitting 250-yard drives and sinking 10 ft putts at the Bob Hope Classic. Playing partners Jesper Parnevik and tournament host and Oscar’s buddy George Lopez helped hold Oscar’s belt as he chipped out of a sloped incline for a save.

By contrast, Floyd looked as if he was set to break dance— rapping and gesturing like a hip hop mogul while counting ‘wads of ‘greenbucks’.

The slugging Golden Boy vs boxing’s Pretty Boy are set to dish out one of the greatest if not the greatest fights of all time—-Old School vs New, Pomp-and-circumstance, Style vs substance….you name it.

The favored de la Hoya is now deep in training with his new cornerman Freddie Roach in his adopted Puerto Rico, where he awaits two of his favored hopefuls, Ray “Boom Boom” Bautista and Alex John ” AJ” Banal in the much-awaited card aptly tagged “The World Awaits.”

The unbeaten Rey,fondly called “Boom Boom” is matched against an equally undefeated Argentine Sergio Miguel Medina in a stellar support of the sold out classic.

AJ Banal is being groomed to tangle with Argentina’s IBF international super-flyweight champion — Sergio Santillan.

“Having witnessed how valiant Gerry Penalosa measured up to Daniel Ponce de Leon, I think Ray is ready for the world championship. But first he has to take care of Medina,” boxingman Hermie Rivera declared.

“As for AJ, Oscar saw a world beater and promptly signed him up.” Rivera added.

Tony Aldeguer’s mainstays at his renowned stable are now training at the Wild Card Gym and then onwards to San Juan, PR where ‘trainer of the year’ Roach awaits them for the concluding grind while ‘The World Awaits”.

Boston Race by H.O.Rivera

Marathon

RP born 36 year old Charina P. Rivera figured well in the 10 K run by finishing 3rd overall at the Bothe-Napa Valley State Park race dominated by adventure sports specialists who answered the call Saturday at Calistoga Ca.

“My feet were were stiff early in the race due to the cold clime but I was able to catch up with the lead runners as I began to heat up midway” said Charina, a new adherent of the sport she has adopted since beating the scourge of drugs, tobacco and alcohol.

It was smooth running along the trail where organizers earlier predicted that the wild weather was no match for the trail-hardy bunch.

So elated were Dave & Wendy Horning of ENVIRO-SPORTS, that invitations for the next races are already posted in the various webs.

Rivera’s fine showing has emboldened her to try the April 8 SKYLINE RIDGE HALF-MARATHON, hosted by the Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve of Palo Alto.

“It is a great escape from the bustle of Silicon Valley says the organizers “where breathtaking views greet the participants with effervescent wild flowers once they start hitting their strides”.

And for the single Mom who has been enamored by the thrills of her newly found sport–Charina advises that “running is the only exercise really that can do away health crushing activities inimical to ones everyday living”.

Well said Ms. Charina. See ya at Boston’s Marathon!
